MEETING HELD BY ORGANIZATIONS OF THE CUBAN CIVIL SOCIETY ON PEACE AND NUCLEAR DISARMAMENT
SR - Prevod
Convened in Havana, the representatives of 80 organizations of the Cuban Civil Society and international organizations based in Cuba, Aware of the need to suppress all acts of aggression and to promote peace and a just and equitable world order based on the Charter of the United Nations and the International Law, highlight our deep concern about the peril to the survival of mankind posed by the existence in the world of over 20 000 nuclear weapons and express our strong support to governments’ actions leading to the achievement of nuclear disarmament as well as to the prohibition and total elimination of said weapons off the face of the earth.
THE ORGANIZATIONS OF THE CUBAN CIVIL SOCIETY PARTICIPATING IN THE MEETING ON PEACE AND NUCLEAR DISARMAMENT DECLARES THE FOLLOWING:
1.Sixty years ago, the United Nations Organization urged to: “eliminate from national armaments of atomic weapons and all other major weapons adaptable to mass destruction.”
2.The total elimination of nuclear weapons is the only and absolute guarantee against their use or threat of use. It is therefore necessary and urgent to achieve nuclear disarmament as soon as possible.
3.It is unacceptable that in the present world, affected by a profound and increasing global economic crisis, the astronomical amount of 1.74 billion dollars are spent in the production of armaments , while 1020 million people suffer from hunger and 11 million children die annually from preventable diseases.
4.The unacceptable doctrine of “nuclear deterrence” must be definitely abandoned, which far from contributing to nuclear disarmament stimulates the everlasting possession of such weapons.
5.We should move forward by means of concrete actions to achieve a comprehensive Nuclear Disarmament and the total elimination of nuclear weapons in accordance with a multilateral, transparent, irreversible and verifiable timetable.
6.We support the proposal made by the Non-Aligned Movement to establish a specific timetable to gradually reduce nuclear weapons until its total elimination and prohibition by not later than 2025.
7.We also express our support to the Declaration adopted in the context of the Summit of the Community of the Latin-American and Caribbean States (ECLAC), held last December, which stressed the strong commitment of all countries of our region to work in the convening of a high- level international conference aimed at identifying ways and methods to eliminate nuclear weapons on the earliest possible date.
8.Cuban non-governmental organizations join this international effort and call upon all people of goodwill worldwide and peace lovers to redouble their efforts to achieve a world free from nuclear weapons free. The present and future generations have the right to live in peace.
9.This declaration is open to be signed by all persons and organizations who agree with the principles and purposes stated herewith.
